Climate and Morphology Shape the Seasonal Thermal Dynamics of Dimictic Lakes: Long-Term Delays in Fall Overturn and the Variability of Winter Stratification
Bibliographic record
Abstract
Climate change is reshaping the seasonal dynamics of dimictic lakes by altering fall overturn and winter stratification. Analysis of a 25-year record from a large Ontario lake shows that fall overturn has been delayed by nearly four weeks since 2000, driven by warmer air temperatures and declining wind speeds. These shifts alter Lake Trout (Salvelinus namaycush) habitat use, spawning, and foraging, as they rush into surface waters once temperatures decrease below 12°C, the temperature isotherm they stay below during summer stratification. High-frequency winter observations from three morphologically distinct Algonquin Park lakes (2021 - 2025) reveal strong spatial and interannual variability in under-ice temperature profiles, controlled by morphometry and meteorological forcing. A refined predictive framework, combining reanalysis data with ice-on simulations, extends these findings to 93 lakes, capturing regional patterns in winter structure. Together, these results demonstrate how climate and morphology interact to govern seasonal lake dynamics and cold-water fish habitat.

Teacher imitationNot calibrated prevalence, not ground truth. Human validation pending. The Gemma side is a direct model label for every work in the frame, read from the title-only record. The Codex side is a classifier learned from the 10,348 direct Codex labels and calibrated to design-weighted sample rates; fields without enough sample support carry no Codex call. Candidate is the union of the two sides; consensus is their intersection. These outputs are machine_predicted_unvalidated and are not human labels.

Machine scores (provisional)
The two teacher heads of the student model, read on this work. A score orders the frame for review; it never asserts a category, and the validation status ships verbatim with every row.
Baseline scores from an immature model (maturity gate not passed, 7 training rounds). Scores rank; they never assert a category.

machine, unvalidatedMachine predicted; a candidate call from one source (direct Gemma or distilled Codex), not a consensus.
