Abstract

Retinal vessel segmentation is crucial process for diagnosing and monitoring various retinal and systemic diseases, such as diabetic retinopathy, glaucoma and hypertension. However, factors like differences in vessel width, low image contrast, and pathological abnormalities make segmentation difficult. To overcome these challenges, we present a Deep Residual Attention U-Net that combines residual connections and attention mechanisms with the U-Net architecture. The Residual blocks help spread features and reduce vanishing gradients, while attention modules help the network focus more effectively on vessel-related features. Testing on benchmark datasets shows that Residual Attention U-net achieves better segmentation accuracy than standard U-Net and other recent models, demonstrating its effectiveness and clinical usefulness.
