Abstract
On trouve chez Berkeley, avant même les thèses de Quine dans « Deux dogmes de l’empirisme », l’idée selon laquelle l’objet physique conçu comme unité d’idées qualitativement différentes est une construction de l’esprit pour vivre. Dans cet article, je montre que cette lecture classique de Berkeley n’est pas erronée, à condition de prendre en compte le rôle du langage et de ne pas considérer littéralement que l’esprit « fait » l’objet. Il faut plutôt avancer que l’esprit fait l’objet au sens où il construit des espèces et des ensembles à partir d’individus distincts, ce qui se justifie si l’on garde à l’esprit que l’unité ontologiquement première chez Berkeley est celle de l’idée, et non celle de l’objet à proprement parler. L’objet berkeleyen n’est cependant pas un pur mythe, puisque l’unification que l’esprit opère prend appui sur une coexistence réelle des idées et est donc épistémiquement fondée.
