Abstract
Sous l’effet des progrès des sciences de la vie, des grandes explorations, du desserrement de la conception chrétienne et des théories vitalistes, matérialistes et sensationnistes en plein essor, le xviii e siècle déploie comme jamais la diversité des formes de vie. À cette diversité correspond une diversité des modes de perception dont des philosophes sensationnistes, tels Condillac, et matérialistes, tels Diderot, déduisent des possibilités phénoménologiques de mondes incommensurables et pourtant parfois communicables. Pour Diderot, l’être humain occupe dans cet ensemble une place toute particulière du fait qu’il est lui-même habité par cette diversité sensorielle et animale, sa raison ayant la charge difficile d’assurer un équilibre toujours en question, notamment dans le cas du génie. Mais derrière cette diversité demeure le problème de l’unité à laquelle elle se rattache, notamment pour la compréhension de l’organisme vivant.
