Abstract
Magyarország növényföldrajzi kutatását közvetett módon egy magyarellenes császári rendelet indítja el (1854), amely előírja, hogy a művészet és tudomány kifejezésére alkalmatlan, alacsonyabb rendű magyar nyelvet az oktatásban minden fokon a német nyelvvel kell felváltani. Ennek keretében kap tanári kinevezést 1855-ben az osztrák Anton Kerner (1831-1898) a budai főreál — a mai Toldy Ferenc —gimnáziumba, majd 3 év múlva főiskolai tanári kinevezést a pesti ipartanodába. Vele kezdődik Magyarország növényföldrajzi kutatása — és mindjárt nemzetközi színvonalon. A fiatal budai tanár 1857-ben a Regensburgi Királyi Természettudományi Társaság kiadványában egy tanulmányt közöl, amely arról szól, hogy az éghajlat felmelegedése során a növények a hegységek magasabb régióiba vándorolnak, illetve hogy a Pannon-tenger kiszáradása után a pannon medence szabaddá vált felszínére a környező hegyek növényeinek kellett leereszkedniük, miközben más fajokká alakultak át. Mindezt két évvel megelőzve Darwin korszakalkotó könyvét a fajok eredetéről.
