Abstract

Developed just four kilometers from the Pisa coastline, it is the fulcrum of a complex district marked by a complex river system centered on the lower course of the Arno and its outlet into the sea, characterized in ancient times as a delta. In relation to the city there are some ports and landing places at least since the High Archaic age (San Piero a Grado; the area of the Gronda dei Lupi [Portus Pisanus]), with which the northernmost cove known as Porto delle Conche. thanks to these settlements, the projection of Pisa and its trade is implemented with what Ferdinand Braudel defined as the “trame de la vie générale de la mer”.
