Abstract
Cet article étudie les façons dont les autorités britanniques ont géré et se sont départies d’un groupe d’esclaves appartenant à la Couronne — ceux qui avaient été confisqués aux rebelles de Grenade en 1795-1796 — du moment de leur acquisition jusqu’à leur émancipation en 1831. L’autrice soutient qu’il est ainsi possible de mieux comprendre pourquoi et par quelles voies l’émancipation a été votée au Royaume-Uni au moment où elle l’a été (en 1833). Les sources analysées démontrent la prégnance de l’idée voulant que les esclaves aient constitué une forme légitime de propriété. La décision prise en 1833 de compenser les propriétaires d’esclaves apparaît dans ce contexte non pas seulement comme pragmatique, mais aussi comme conforme aux pratiques et aux préjugés ayant alors cours parmi les officiers du Conseil du trésor.
