Abstract
江戸時代中期の宝暦五年(一七五五年),熊本藩に創設された藩校時習館の初代教授秋山玉山が撰した「時習館学規」中,漢籍の読み方を規定した第六条「害須背誦誦須華音否則四声不明同訓相混宇位或易語助或脱不足以供文辞之用和読之陋也故害必背誦誦必華音而後斎楚合焉彼此一焉是処之荘嶽之間之術也立漢語之師」を取り上げ,これにより,長い間伝統的な漢文訓読法による漢文教育が行われてきた中で,中国語音に基づく漢文直読法による漢文教育が,学校教育の中に取り入れられたことを論じた。漢籍の読解方法について,中国語で書かれた漢籍を日本語として読むゆえに弊害を生む伝統的な漢文訓読法を退け,外国語文献を読む本来の方法に則り,中国語で書かれた漢籍を中国語の発音と文法によって読もうとする漢文直読法を,藩校教育の現場で明確に規定し,提唱した意義は大きい。
