オンタリオ州南部の典型的な農業地域に位置し,高濃度の硝酸態窒素を有する小河川周辺で硝酸態窒素の分布および,河川への土壌水と地下水の出入りを調査した。本河川では上流3分の1の区間のみで地下水が河川に流入しており,そこの地下水中にスポット的に存在する高濃度の硝酸態窒素が河川水中硝酸態窒素の負荷源の一つになっていることがわかった。本河川下流部の緩衝帯中の地下水では硝酸態窒素の濃度低下が確認されているが,緩衝帯幅の狭い上流部では充分な濃度減衰が生じていないと考えられる。畑地の不飽和帯土壌水中硝酸帯窒素は上層で高濃度,深さと共に濃度の減少が見られその濃度低下の反応速度係数は10^<-3>から1O^<-2>(mg/l/day)と推定された。このことより不飽和帯ではかなりの脱窒によると考えられる濃度低下がおきていることがわかった。とうもろこし畑と大麦畑下では高濃度の硝酸態窒素が地下水面までに到達しており地下水汚染の負荷源となっている。本河川には8本のタイルの排出口および周辺ではミミズなどによる多数のマクロボアが確認されており,上流の地下水だけでは河川水の1Omg/l前後の硝酸態窒素濃度を説明することができないことから,これらが不飽和帯上部から直接硝酸態窒素を直接河川へ流出させる経路となり,河川の高い硝酸帯窒素濃度を形成する一因となっていることが示唆された。
