Abstract
Reflecting on the increase in the use of social media in global Indigenous movements, this article examines the significance and limitations of such movements, focusing on the Canadian “#Idle No More” and Australian “#sosblakaustralia.” Indigenous activists in both countries utilized their Facebook pages to mobilize Indigenous and non-Indigenous viewers for offline rallies and to develop solidarity, both locally and globally, by inducing emotions of anger, sorrow, and hope. While the use of social media has enabled Indigenous people to express their diverse opinions, which are rarely heard in mainstream media, there are also limitations to this mode of expression owing to the logics of imperialism and capitalism inherent in social media. Future studies need to focus on how Indigenous movements involve resisting these logics in their use of social media.
