Abstract
This paper examines an apparently centrist political pamphlet in late seventeenth century Britain entitled The Character of a Trimmer（writ. c.1684－85, pub.1688）by George Savile, lst Marquis of Halifax（1633－95）,and reveals the conservative feature behind his practical middle-of-the-roadism, with a special focus on his remarks on the political side of the British constitution．
