Abstract
Autor twierdzi, że powinność moralna pozostaje powinnością nawet dla tych, którzy nie są w stanie jej wypełnić. Przyznaje, że pozostają oni bez winy, gdy nie wypełniają swego obowiązku, ale nalega, by uznać ich obowiązek za wiążący. W ten sposób podważony zostaje aforyzm: „powinność nie obowiązuje, gdy nie można jej spełnić”. By obronić swe przekonanie, autor wskazuje na niezawinioną niewiedzę. Wydaje mu się jasne, że czasami jest naszym obowiązkiem ustalić coś, czego nie jesteśmy w stanie odkryć i wyjaśnić. W odniesieniu do tej sytuacji autor opisuje cztery kategorie sprawców: pesymistę, relatywistę, liberała i dogmatyka. Twierdzi, że tylko dogmatyk jest zobowiązany uznać, że ignorancja eliminuje powinność. Takie przekonanie wydaje mu się jednak nie do pogodzenia z dwoma najbardziej wiarygodnymi naturalistycznymi wyjaśnieniami źródła moralnych postaw: teorią postaw reaktywnych opracowaną przez P.F. Strawsona i teorią społecznego poznania Alberta Bandury.
