La dégradation de la matière organique terrestre intrigue les scientifiques depuis des décennies. Si l’on a longtemps cru qu’elle était réfractaire à toute dégradation en mer, il a finalement été démontré que la signature en matière organique terrestre dans les sédiments côtiers était très faible. Afin de mieux comprendre ces processus de dégradation, il est crucial d’étudier leur activité de manière globale, et d’essayer de déterminer les mécanismes en jeu.Grâce à un éventail de traceurs lipidiques mis en place dans le but de déterminer à la fois l’origine de la matière organique particulaire et les processus dégradatifs qu’elle a subi, les échantillons prélevés dans le Rhône ont été analysés, puis comparés avec ceux obtenus dans les zones arctiques et tropicales. Les rôles de la photo-oxydation et de l’autoxydation lors du transport fluvial ont été mis en évidence : si la photo-oxidation est le processus principal de dégradation de la matière organique terrestre dans le fleuve Mackenzie (Canada Arctique), c’est l’autoxydation qui tient le rôle principal dans l’Amazone. Dans le Rhône, les deux processus n’ont qu’un impact modéré sur la matière en suspension fluviale, mais une autoxydation intense a néanmoins été observée dans son panache, tout comme dans le panache du Mackenzie.Les analyses supplémentaires effectuées sur les échantillons collectés nous ont permis de formuler – et de confirmer – une nouvelle hypothèse. Une activité enzymatique lipoxygénase a pu être observée et quantifiée dans tous les échantillons étudiés, à des degrés d’activité différents dépendant des conditions locales.
