Abstract
In recent years personal names have been a major research field for epigraphists, philologists as well as historians. Of special interest are the Ambracian onomastics. Ambracia (modern Aita) lies on southern Epims, along the north shores of the Ambracian Gulf. Founded by the Corinthians in the last quarter of the 7th century BC Ambracia flourished during the Hellenistic period. Little was known though about the ancient city as it lies beneath the modem town of Aita. Rescue excavations conducted by the local Ephoreia during the last decades have added much to our detailed knowledge of all aspects of Ambracia from Geometric to the Roman periods The onomastic material presented here derives from the study of grave stelai, dedicatory inscriptions, coin legends, graffiti as well as historical and philological evindence. Hence an overview of the names known so far, is being attempted while emphasis will be given in the study of the political and socio-economic history of the area.
