Abstract
O autor, jurista, jornalista, político e membro da Academia Norte-riograndense de Letras, formou-se pela Faculdade de Direito do Recife (1871) e iniciou a vida como promotor público na Paraíba, passando mais tarde a Procurador Fiscal dos Feitos da Fazenda em Fortaleza. Foi um dos que mais contribuiu com a causa abolicionista no Ceará e no Rio Grande do Norte, obtendo em algumas localidades o fim da escravidão muito antes da Lei Áurea. Orador talentoso, ficou conhecido como O Tribuno da Abolição. Como jornalista dirigiu o jornal "O Libertador" em Fortaleza e partiu posteriormente para Manaus em 1884, dirigindo o jornal "O Rio Branco". Lá elegeu-se vereador e, mais tarde, como deputado federal, participou ativamente dos trabalhos constituintes. Em 1894 tornou-se senador da República pelo Rio Grande do Norte, sendo grande oposicionista do governo Prudente de Moraes. Faleceu no exercício do cargo em 1899, deixando algumas obras entre as quais “Os Rodrigões do Império, ou Caráter da Única Monarquia Americana". Tratam-se de artigos do periódico O Libertador, e outros textos, de cunho abolicionista, em ataque a Antonio Joaquim Rodrigues Junior, Ministro da Guerra, e Lourenço Cavalcanti de Albuquerque, Ministro das Relações Exteriores, e mais tarde dos Transportes e Agricultura. A obra foi publicada por Almino Affonso com o pseudônimo de Junius Brutus.
