Abstract
One day in the autumn of 2017, a group of elderly Turkish Cypriot women gathered in a house in the northern part of Nicosia, Cyprus's divided capital, where they knitted as they drank coffee, smoked, and gossiped. All were in their late seventies and had been young women, mostly newly married, when the intercommunal violence that would ultimately divide the island broke out in late 1963. They were all relatively well-educated and had worked as teachers, civil servants, and secretaries, although many of them changed their jobs when, during the most intense period of fighting, a quarter of the Turkish Cypriot community became displaced, and almost the entire community retreated into militarised ghettoes. The women who were knitting sweaters that day had, in the 1960s, resettled refugees and sewn uniforms for fighters. Following the island's de facto division in 1974, the women continued their careers in the new civil service of an unrecognised state. In their retirement, they visit each other to brag or complain about their children and grandchildren, and they sometimes take excursions together.
