Abstract
Dans ce récit publié en 1849 à New York, Henry Bibb livre un témoignage vertigineux : celui d’un homme né esclave qui consacra sa vie à la résistance contre « l’institution particulière » du Sud des États-Unis. Fugitif opiniâtre, il raconte le travail forcé, les châtiments, les privations, mais aussi les incarcérations et les ventes successives qui le conduisent de son Kentucky natal jusqu’aux confins de la Louisiane, et même parmi les Cherokees du Territoire indien. Mari et père, il détaille l’impossible quête d’un bonheur simple auprès des siens, qu’il échoue à soustraire à la cruauté d’une servitude perpétuelle. Il dit enfin l’impérieuse nécessité qui le porte, définitivement émancipé, à poursuivre son combat depuis le nord des États-Unis et le Canada. Il dévoile les revers d’un mouvement abolitionniste ni populaire, ni majoritaire, et dénonce les travers d’une société corrompue par l’esclavage et le racisme, dans une nation de plus en plus fragmentée et au bord de l’éclatement.
