Abstract
La question du statut académique de la criminologie est une vieille controverse française. Un débat similaire existe aux États-Unis malgré l'existence de départements de criminologie au sein de certaines universités, où l'on trouve des académiques criminologues professionnels. Cet article se propose d'analyser la structure de cette profession et montre que les débats sur la légitimité d'une criminologie disciplinairement autonome se superposent à une hiérarchie en termes de prestige social. Les enseignements pour la situation française sont riches : au final, la situation états-unienne n'est pas si différente que cela de la nôtre, si ce n'est que la taille du corps professoral états-unien et la décentralisation des identités disciplinaires permettent l'existence, à la périphérie, d'une « approche synthétique » qui n'existe que très marginalement chez nous, mais qui éprouve, des deux côtés de l'Atlantique, les mêmes difficultés d'obtention de reconnaissance.
