Abstract
At the time of the Sri Lankan civil war in the 1980s, Tamil civilians sought refuge in several countries such as the United Kingdom and other European countries, Canada, Australia and India. Unlike in India, Sri Lankan Tamil refugees in Western countries were well integrated into host societies, were granted permanent residency, and, in many cases, obtained citizenship. However, they continued to follow their religious, cultural, and linguistic ties to their homeland. Lord Murugan has been taken by the diasporic Tamils wherever they have migrated. In the Western setting, everyone dedicates evenings and weekends to leisure and refreshment. Temples have emerged as important spaces of gathering for first and second-generation Tamil migrants. Beyond religious practice, these temples function as places of social interaction, cultural continuity and collective memory. This research explores Murugan worship in Switzerland by focusing on the Kulturverein Murugan Bern (Sri Kalyana Subramaniar Swamy Temple in Toffen, Bern). Beyond religiosity, the temple observes Maaveerar Naal (Martyrs' Day) every year to commemorate the sagacious martyrs of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE). It features a carved map of Tamil Eelam on its walls. This paper examines how Murugan worship among Swiss Tamils becomes a space of comfort that expresses the ongoing longing for the homeland and its political freedom and serves as a means for cultural preservation within the refugee diaspora.
