Abstract
This article focuses on 1970s performance artists who employed unusual, aestheticized, and distorted acts of walking in the city as an intrusion into everyday infrastructure. Juxtaposing Kim Jones’ (aka. Mudman) Wilshire Boulevard Walk (1976) and Papo Colo’s Superman 51 (1977), the article argues that these artists employed walking as a kinesthetic tactic of protest. In defining these walking practices, I posit a performance studies framework that employs my own practice-based-research. Journeying through my ever-evolving understanding of walking, I hope to critically reframe practices of walking as continually changing, responding, resisting, and reshaping the built environment from the 1970s to today.
