Türkiye Cumhuriyetinin harita üretme ihtiyacına yönelik inşa edilmiş ve aynı zamanda bir okul vazifesi görmüş “Harita Umum Müdürlüğü” binası, halen sahip olduğu sanatsal ve mimari vasıflarıyla I. Ulusal Mimarlık Dönemi'nin başkentteki önemli bir temsilcisi olarak kabul edilmelidir. Bugüne kadar bina hakkında sanat ve mimarlık tarihi bakımından ayrıntılı bir çalışma yapılmamıştır. Bu makalede binanın inşa sürecini hazırlayan faktörler, ne zaman inşa edildiği, mimari ve sanatsal özellikleri aydınlatılmaya çalışılmış; Cumhuriyet arşivlerindeki belgeler taranarak edinilen bilgiler ışığında inşa süreci ve tarihi belirlenmiş; bina, plan, cephe karakteristikleri, sanatsal ve mimari vasıfları ile tanıtılarak ait olduğu I. Ulusal Mimarlık dönemi içerisindeki yeri ve önemi üzerinde durulmak istenmiştir.
