Abstract
Cet article analyse la quête identitaire et les questions de la judéité dans le roman Aaron (1946) d'Yves Thériault. Ce roman urbain repose sur une série de dédoublements et surtout un conflit intergénérationnel entre le grand-père et son petit-fils. D'une part, Moishe, le patriarche de la famille, représente la tradition et la religion ; d'autre part, le jeune Aaron, le progrès et la modernité grâce auxquels il s'éloigne de plus en plus du judaïsme. Transplantée sur le sol canadien après des événements tragiques, les deux essayent de naviguer leurs identités des exilés. D'un côté, Aaron invite le lecteur non juif à la découverte de la culture juive et des méandres du destin errant des Juifs qui essayent de trouver un nouveau domicile. De l'autre côté, le roman illustre comment les Juifs abandonnent l'orthodoxie aux bénéfices des courants moins exigeants ou même subissent un processus de sécularisation complète et, par conséquent, ne seront plus déterminés par la religion.
