Este estudio explora el panorama cambiante de la tecnología educativa (ed-tech) en el contexto de la creciente atención mundial y nacional sobre el tema, con la pandemia de COVID-19 acelerando la incorporación de la tecnología en la educación para mitigar los problemas de acceso, calidad y gestión. La investigación, centrada en los retos y las oportunidades de las escuelas primarias y secundarias de los países de renta media baja (PRMB), identifica tres dimensiones críticas que son fundamentales en los debates sobre ed-tech y que no se han explorado lo suficiente en los PRMB: las implicaciones pedagógicas, el papel de la ed-tech a la hora de abordar las desigualdades y las estructuras de gobernanza. El estudio, que aborda las lagunas de conocimiento mediante revisiones regionales y consultas a expertos, subraya la urgente necesidad de dar prioridad a la dimensión educativa en las iniciativas de ed-tech, situándola en primera línea de los debates y las iniciativas. Las conclusiones subrayan la necesidad de conocer mejor el acceso de los niños a las herramientas digitales, su competencia en el uso de las mismas y la preparación de los profesores para incorporar la tecnología a un aprendizaje eficaz. El estudio también subraya lo inadecuado de una rápida implantación de la tecnología sin un plan integral, afirmando que la tecnología por sí sola no mejora la educación; su potencial se realiza dentro de una estrategia más amplia centrada en mejoras universales del aprendizaje. Haciendo hincapié en los mecanismos de gobernanza eficaces, la investigación ilustra la importancia de contar con ecosistemas de tecnología educativa bien organizados y sólidos para lograr un impacto positivo sostenido.
