Abstract
Based on archival documents and published memoirs, this study examines the life and activities of P. Bashuk, a leading member of the Organisation of Ukrainian Nationalists (OUN) and a public and political figure in the Ukrainian diaspora in Canada. It highlights the formation of his nationalist worldview, his education at the Peremyshl Gymnasium, and the repression of the Polish occupation authorities. The conditions and environment of P. Bashuk at that time, his worldview and the socio-political situation are described. The stages of evolution of the type and psyche of a revolutionary and underground activist, the dedication and subordination of his own life to the service of the ideals of the nation, and his imprisonment are shown. The role of P. Bashuk as the leader and organiser of the Polissya Cossack uprising in September 1939 in Polissya and the Pinsk, Dorogichin, Stolin, Davygorod, and Luninets counties is clarified. His social and political activities in 1939–1941 in the General Government (Zakerzonia), where he organised rural cooperatives, ‘Native Schools’ and worked as an organisational consultant for the UDC, have been reconstructed. The activities in the structures of the Ukrainian liberation movement are analyzed: the formation of OUN marching groups, training at the non-commissioned officer school in the village of Varyazh, and the organization of military training for 700 people. The role of P. Bashuk during the proclamation of the Act of Restoration of the Ukrainian State on June 30, 1941, his management of the transit point for prisoners of war on Kleparivska Street in Lviv on behalf of the UDC, where he helped many Ukrainians to free themselves or escape, is outlined. It is established that in order to avoid arrest by the Gestapo, he joined the Armed Underground of the OUN and fought against the German occupation authorities. The main moments of the arrest and sending to German prisons and concentration camps by the end of the Second World War of P. Bashuk and other leading members of the OUN, many of whom were physically destroyed, are revealed. The concentration camp world of Auschwitz prisoners and the conditions in which P. Bashuk, mutual assistance in prison life and care for newcomers. The periods of P. Bashuk’s activity in the structures of the Central Committee of the OUN, the formation of youth and student organizations, co-founder of the League for the Liberation of Ukraine in Canada, a member of the publishing house and editorial board of «Gomon Ukrainy» and its permanent correspondent are described. It is noted that, in addition to numerous educational programs, he was also constantly engaged in organizing anti-communist demonstrations near the consulates and embassies of the USSR.
