La notion d'"installations classées" n'est connue que par les personnes directement concernées (salariés, juristes, riverains...). Il s'agit d'une réglementation particulière du droit qui permet de prévenir et d'encadrer les entreprises (chantiers, carrières, exploitations agricoles, usines...) dont l'activité peut avoir des conséquences négatives sur l'environnement. Le secteur industriel pose cependant le plus de problèmes. La première réglementation remonte à 1810, mais c'est en 1976 que des progrès majeurs sont réalisés. Une nomenclature est instaurée qui liste l'ensemble des entreprises classées et qui est régulièrement mise à jour. Le contrôle des installations classées ainsi que l'application de la réglementation sont effectués par des inspecteurs qui sont des fonctionnaires de l'Etat. Les installations classées sont aussi placées sous l'autosurveillance du chef d'entreprise qui s'expose à des sanctions administratives et pénales en cas de non exécution
