Avant 2020 et la pandémie de coronavirus, les grands théâtres français possèdent déjà leur chaîne YouTube, mais ne mettent en ligne que de brefs extraits. YouTube diffuse surtout du théâtre de boulevard. À partir des premières restrictions liées à la crise sanitaire, cet usage boulevardier s’intensifie, mais on constate aussi quelques nouveaux usages de YouTube, devenu temporairement le refuge du spectacle vivant. Ces expérimentations invitent à se demander, d’une part, si YouTube n’est que conjoncturellement propice au théâtre et, d’autre part, si les quelques formes spectaculaires nouvelles qui s’y déploient peuvent encore être appelées « théâtre », dès lors que la coprésence acteur·trices / spectateur·trices n’a lieu à aucun moment.
