Abstract
Cet article explore quelques-unes des foisonnantes activités de recherche du physiologiste italien Angelo Mosso (1846-1910). À Turin, au cœur de son laboratoire, des sujets faits personnages, aussi rares qu’idéaux, offrent un accès privilégié aux autographes cérébraux qui accompagnent l’activité mentale ou l’expression des émotions. Le laboratoire de Mosso est dédié à l’étude des mouvements intérieurs de la vie des sujets et propose une forme de physiologie sociale qui témoigne d’une épistémologie ouverte incluant la ville, les bruits et l’hétérogénéité des sujets expérimentaux comme base à l’universalité des phénomènes étudiés. À travers cette étude de cas, une histoire des rapports intriqués entre empirisme et théorisation, entre conceptualisation et technicité dans l’étude des fondements physiques de la conscience humaine est proposée.
