An ecological survey was conducted July 30 - August 4th, 2025 to characterize the landscape around an eddy covariance tower site located near Mittimatalik (Pond Inlet), NU (72.6695, -77.9981). The tower was installed in 2024 by Woodwell Climate Research Center and is now operated by Woodwell as part of the Permafrost Pathways Arctic Carbon Monitoring program. All eddy covariance tower measurements will be made available on the Ameriflux website (AMF site ID: CA-Mtk). The site is characterized as a mesic to dry tundra with sandy soils and landscape depressions periodically inundated with shallow standing water. The site features tussock graminoids, wet sedges, dwarf and prostrate shrubs, forbs, lichen, and mosses. Sampling plots were established every 10 - 20 meters (m) along 100 m transects extending north, east, south, and west from the tower. Surveys included thaw depth measurements every 10m, vegetation surveys of 50 centimeter (cm) x 50 cm plots to determine PFT coverage and PFT height, and measurements of soil organic layer in dominant landscape types/features near the EC tower.
