La asignatura Cuidado y Calidad de Vida III, correspondiente al hilo conductor de salud mental, aborda la participación comunitaria como un factor protector de la salud mental. Desde el modelo pedagógico socioformativo, la Guía de Establecimiento de la Relación Terapéutica de la Registered Nurses Association of Ontario (RNAO, 2002) y los métodos propios de la Investigación Acción Participativa (IAP), se analizó la participación escasa y de baja calidad que no protege la salud mental. Para ello se valoraron aspectos estructurales —tejido social, comunicación comunitaria y concertación— así como la participación como producto. Los hallazgos fueron utilizados para plantear diagnósticos, intervenciones y resultados de enfermería, y para diseñar y evaluar las intervenciones. La principal conclusión es que, para participar efectivamente, las comunidades deben fortalecer su estructura interna y aspirar a la autonomía; de lo contrario, la participación de calidad será improbable y la salud mental estará menos protegida.
