Abstract

L’amitié se tisse lentement entre ce retraité (bougon, vulgaire, alcoolique) et la petite Hélène, dix ans, jusqu’à devenir une indéfectible amitié après l’agression qu’elle a subie. Elle lui sera éternellement reconnaissante d’avoir évité le pire grâce à son intervention. Il la sauve, peut-on dire, mais elle le sauve aussi en lui offrant le roman d’Hemingway (1952) qu’il finira par s’approprier avant de mourir. Ici, le livre est symbole de transmission intergénérationnelle et porteur de mémoires collectives pour les familles de la petite et de Roger, pour les cinéphiles en salle et pour les lecteurs de romans littéraires.
