Abstract
In this testimony, the author expresses how the budding of her awareness has been linked to the sea and her grandmother’s memories of it, reminiscing about old stone buildings in her hometown, Damietta. This created in the author a sense of longing for something unknown, the untangling of which required an attachment to writing, history, and practicing journalism. Thus, she has not written the self, rather she has written on Egypt/history. In her novel Al-Ghurr (1998), she goes back to the last quarter of the nineteenth century when a Nubian slave is kidnapped, escapes to Egypt, and settles down in Damietta. Sixteenth-century Damietta was itself a model of the multi-national/religious Ottoman society whose creative interaction and shared concerns are highlighted in her novel Nawwat al-karm (2002; 2003). The Mediterranean sea enjoys a metaphysical presence and a central role in the novel, where there is piracy, and reciprocal culture and trade. The novel questions the notion that “history has the final word.”
