Abstract

Leucospidae are a small cosmopolitan family of ectoparasitoids usually attacking the nests of bees and aculeate wasps. They are among the largest Chalcidoidea and the only family with a robust metafemur with a row of well-developed teeth on the ventral margin, an arched metatibia, the ovipositor almost always rotated upward and forward over the gaster, and the fore wings folded longitudinally. The monophyly of Leucospidae was recovered both using molecular data alone and in a combined analysis with morphology. However, its relationship within Chalcidoidea remains poorly resolved. Historically, the family was considered as sister-group of Chalcididae, but this relationship was not recovered in any of the recent phylogenetics studies. The chapter provides a diagnosis, discusses relevant morphology, summarizes their distribution, natural history, economic importance and the fossil record, and provides a key to the genera.
