Abstract
Durch seine hohe Symbolkraft erfährt das grönländische Essen eine Renaissance zur Markierung des Unterschieds. Während es negativ konnotiert die Menschen der Arktis zu Rohfleischessern werden ließ, verwenden die grönländischen Inuit heute ihr Essen Kalaalimernit als positives Zeichen der Selbstrepräsentation im andauernden Dekolonialisierungsprozess. Der vorliegende Artikel zeigt, dass durch den Konsum lokaler Nahrungsressourcen eine kulturelle Grenzziehung erfolgt, die Grönländer von Dänen beziehungsweise dem Rest der Welt trennt. Der Grund dafür liegt in den zugeschriebenen Eigenschaften, die das grönländische Essen zum Symbol für Grönländisch-Sein erhebt. Insofern fungiert Kalaalimernit neben der grönländischen Sprache als Distinktionsmittel, das im politischen Machtdiskurs instrumentalisiert wird, um eigene Interessen zur Geltung zu bringen.
