He sets out on an errand with the promise of thousands of dollars if he can find Silk or his guitars. From New York to a remote part of Canada, Silk has left a trail of people in his wake, and Julius connects one to the next like stepping stones, encountering additional offbeat characters as well. The supporting characters (a handful of whom are played by real-life musicians) are one of the film’s greatest strengths, though they feel less fully realized as Julius gets closer to Silk. The momentum picks back up when we meet Lucille, only the second person Julius encounters who has severed from Silk rather than the other way around. Small character acting choices from the cast at large add quirk and comedic chaos without overshadowing the film’s central dramatic streak. The film also thrives on neat pacing and captivating, sparse dialogue, some artfully delivered from offscreen so that the recipient stays in full focus. In fact, the film always seems to hold focus in the perfect place, for the perfect amount of time; it makes strategic use of tableau-like shots and moments of stillness in its blocking. This setup encourages viewers to linger, to see the individuals in what is quite a large and fleeting cast. It also holds the viewer in place along with Julius as he consistently gets derailed or held back from his ultimate destination: wherever Elmore Silk is. When he reaches his destination, Julius doesn’t find success or fulfillment; the main result of his quest is that his place in the universe is shifted away from the center. He begins with a grandiose sense of his own journey and the inevitable centrality of his goal, despite discovering evidence that Silk doesn’t seem to keep anyone in the center of his life. He finds Silk only to also meet a rival buyer against whom he never stood a chance; her quest was already bending toward success while, as Silk puts it to Julius, “Sonny, you’re not even on the board. Not even at the tail end of my dance card.” This film would make a good addition to a film studies, English, or other creative courses. It could serve as a starting point for a discussion of artistry versus industry in the music world or as a study of storytelling, narrative structure, and cinematography.
