Abstract
My commentary is entitled “Revolution at Work: ASL Curriculum Revisited.” In the past 2 1/2 years, there have been many changes. One critical change is the ASL course requirement for all freshmen at Gallaudet University. The core of that requirement is the new revision of the University Mission, which states that Gallaudet is a bilingual university, including ASL and English. Students must be fluent in both languages. This has impacted the curriculum, technology, and teachers... it is a widespread impact. This implies a great deal: whether you are at a deaf school or college, and whether you are American or Canadian or of other international origin, and you feel bilingualism is important, then you need to look at the mission. If the mission includes bilingualism, this can then be applied to the curriculum, which can be modified so that all students will assess their two languages and embrace them. They can analyze, measure, teach, discourse, and partake in critical thinking. Translated English available.
