Abstract
Made from white and purple beads assembled as strings or belts, wampums are, amongst their other functions, mnemonic devices supporting normative principles within First Nations' legal orders. Since the beginning of the 1980s, and pushed by a movement of cultural and judicial renaissance, indigenous peoples have filed wampum belts in support of their legal or factual claims in more than thirty Canadian cases touching various areas of law. An analysis of this case law allows for an examination of the quality of interactions between indigenous and state legal orders, which entails a more fundamental reflection on the limits of the politics of recognition in the context of Canadian multijuridism.
