Abstract
This thesis examines the little known presence of the Situationist thought in Québec literature between 1958 and 1982. This current travel from France to Québec through Patrick Straram, an exiled Parisian who arrived in Montréal in1958, and early friend of Guy Debord, the founding figure of the Situationist International (S.I.). For two decades, the Situationist thought seems to have infiltrated the writings of Hubert Aquin, Jean Basile, Nicole Brossard, Paul Chamberland, Gilbert Langevin and Straram himself, sometimes unbeknownst to them. Our main hypothesis is that the stealthy presence of the S.I. thought makes their writing an engaging (engageante) practices, not to be understood in the light of Sartre's engagement, but rather in the sense that they invite, sometimes by way of blatant provocation, the readers to fully participate in the sensible world in order to transform it. Our analyses are divided into three poles, the first of which is the questioning of urban organization. This can be partially described as a will to take part freely in a physical environment by reinventing it circulation modalities. The critique of everyday life, our second pole, falls under the more abstract intent to blend literature and existence into one indivisible entity. Finally, the third pole, the fight against the spectacle, boasts a more philosophical dimension and is embodied in the rejection of any form of representation as it falsifies human relationships. All three ally to protest against mediation between reality and perception, in order to pave the way for transformative action. They are embodied in narrative fiction (Aquin, Basile, Brossard) as well as in poetry (Chamberland, Langevin, Straram) to serve as a basis for engaging writing.Under the impulse of the Situationist thought, literature reaches, in the works of Aquin, Brossard, Chamberland, Langevin and Straram, a dimension that extends from the affective (the relation to the city) to the subjective (the critique of everyday life) and the effective (the attack on the spectacle). Their writing thus combines the intimate and the collective in a progression oriented towards action. Hence, they become protagonists of a profound intellectual adventure whose ultimate aim is no less than the abolition of the readership as a passive entity and its subsumption into the Situationist category of ''viveurs''
