Diversity of Scathophagidae (Diptera) in northern Canada: patterns in space and time

Notre étude visait à comprendre les patrons spatiaux de diversité gouvernant la répartition d'une famille de mouches qui domine le Nord, les Scathophagidae (Diptera), dans le Canada septentrional. Nous avons également examiné les changements à long terme survenus dans la taille de Scathophaga furcata, une espèce répandue et commune, sur une échelle temporelle d'un demi-siècle. Les données contemporaines composées de 2320 Scathophagidae ont été obtenues lors de récoltes effectuées en 2011 et 2012 dans le cadre du Programme sur la biodiversité nordique. Les spécimens historiques on été recueillis lors d'un inventaire des insectes du Nord canadien, le Northern Insect Survey, entre 1947 et 1967. Pendant cet inventaire, douze sites ont été échantillonnés dans les régions écoclimatiques arctique, subarctique et nord-boréale. L'abondance de Scathophagidae augmentait de pair avec la latitude, et la diversité atteignait son maximum dans les sites situés dans l'écozone subarctique. La composition de la communauté de Scathophagidae constituait des regroupements sous l'influence de trois éléments spatiaux : les îles et les sites continentaux; en amont et en aval de la limite des arbres; et la délimitation des écozones. Durant les 60 dernières années, la taille corporelle de Scathophaga furcata a diminué à trois sites nordiques canadiens : Moosonee, ON, Yellowknife, NT, Churchill, MB. Cette tendance coïncide avec l'augmentation de la température saisonnière et des variables climatiques changeantes qui pourraient être en grande partie responsables du déclin de la taille de S. furcata. Ces résultats laissent entendre que Scathophagidae est un taxon divers et abondant dans le nord et que cette famille réagit au changement climatique. Un suivi à long terme de taxons tel que Scathophagidae, situés dans des écosystèmes nordiques vulnérables, est nécessaire afin de documenter les changements à venir.
