Les comportements d’automutilation sont alarmants et répandus en milieu scolaire (Lewis et al., 2019). Les études effectuées au cours des dernières années ont permis d’identifier des vulnérabilités psychosociales chez les étudiants universitaires qui ont des comportements d’automutilation (e.g., Hamza & Willoughby, 2014; Whitlock et al., 2011). Toutefois, la manière dont ces jeunes s’adaptent à leur transition universitaire a moins fait l’objet d’études. Plus précisément, il demeure incertain si les étudiants qui se sont déjà automutilés au cours de leur vie s’adaptent différemment à l’université sur le plan personnel-émotionnel, social et académique comparativement aux étudiants qui n’ont jamais eu recours à ce comportement. Par conséquent, cette étude avait pour but d’explorer si ces deux groupes diffèrent au niveau de leurs ressources psychologiques et de leur adaptation à la vie universitaire. Parallèlement, un autre objectif était d’évaluer l’impact de l’automutilation sur l’adaptation universitaire. Cette recherche a été menée auprès de 231 étudiants de première année issus d’une une grande université canadienne. Ces étudiants étaient invités à compléter un sondage électronique durant le semestre d’hiver au cours de leur première et deuxième année d’université. Ce sondage incluait des questionnaires d’auto-évaluation portant sur la perception de stress, le support social, les comportements d’adaptation, l’auto-efficacité et l’adaptation universitaire. Par rapport aux étudiants qui ne se sont jamais automutilés, ceux ayant eu recours à ce comportement ont indiqué avoir moins de ressources psychologiques et se sentir moins bien adaptés à la vie universitaire tant au plan personnel-émotionnelle, social et académique. De plus, ces derniers se sentaient moins attachés et satisfaits de leur institution universitaire. Curieusement, l’écart d’adaptation universitaire entre les deux groupes était plus prononcé au cours de la deuxième année d’université. De plus, les résultats obtenus dans cette étude ont montré que l’automutilation n’agissait pas comme facteur de risque une fois que le stress, le support social et l’auto-efficacité étaient pris en considération. Les répercussions sur les pratiques cliniques en milieu universitaire sont évoquées à la fin de cette dissertation
