Abstract
Pop Cycle for percussion quartet features a collection of Canadian popular songs that are presented in an unrecognizable state, as their melodies and narrative properties are abstracted in order to remove their original, 'authentic' cultural context. Inspired by the intertextual works of George Crumb (such as The River of Life (Songs of Joy and Sorrow) - American Songbook I, 2003), I have selected eight Canadian songs that represent my personal cultural experience. Pop Cycle combines the structure of a vinyl LP and the curation of a personal playlist to build an original narrative from this pre-existing musical material. Also inspired by Crumb, Pop Cycle's sectional development relies on simultaneous changes of timbre and texture to organize its material. Each of the work's four players is equipped with both 'foreground' and 'background' instruments, as each player is assigned either soloistic or supportive material in each section. The theme of a 'constant Other' in Canadian cultural identity is represented by these dual roles each player must inhabit, as well as the sonic presence of both 'note' and 'noise,' and the presence of complementary pitch class cells (CPCCs) that appear alongside the pop songs' pitch content.
