Abstract

fetched live from OpenAlex

This master thesis offers a critical response to the political and nationalist reading of Hubert Aquin's novelistic work. It is based on his last novel, Neige noire (trad. Hamlet's Twin, 1974), which is considered by critics to be both the synthesis and the outcome of the long reflection on writing undertaken at the beginning of his literary career (Mocquais, Pelletier, Richard). The argument supporting this thesis is that Neige noire is carrying on an aesthetic project, started in Aquin's prior novel, L'Antiphonaire (1969), which, according to the terms he uses in the synopsis of this third novel, consists in the "globalization of the novel form." In this synopsis, he discusses bringing down the temporal and spatial frontiers of the novelistic form. Using this thinly described project as a starting point, this thesis offers a new reading of the aesthetic qualities of Neige noire. At the same time, it seeks to improve our critical comprehension of this aesthetic principle that seems to coincide with a turning point in his novelistic work. The three first chapters examine three different types of space that we encounter in the novel, namely the geographic space, the consciousness space and the cultural space, in their relation with time. Each chapter brings out the logic on which the ensuing break-up of the frontiers is based. The fourth chapter focuses on the central preoccupation of the novel: the passage of time, which becomes, in Aquin's work, a universal truth that touches all men, and so, possibly, the thematic corollary of the "globalization of the novelistic form". Finally, the conclusion reflects on the link between Neige noire and the place where the novel was written, the province of Quebec.

Machine scores (provisional)

The two teacher heads of the student model, read on this work. A score orders the frame for review; it never asserts a category, and the validation status ships verbatim with every row.

Baseline scores from an immature model (maturity gate not passed, 7 training rounds). Scores rank; they never assert a category.
