Abstract
What of the representation of the house in contemporary Quebec literature? This inquiry serves as a starting point for the investigation carried out in this Master’s thesis, which questions the depiction of the home through the representations found in Virginie DeChamplain’s novel Les falaises, and Nicholas Dawson’s hybrid narrative Désormais, ma demeure, both published in 2020. These texts offer both a literal and a metaphorical crossing of the representation of the house, where it is not only a question of managing to escape it to be able to better return, but also of overcoming the pathological relationship to home through a scriptural process which aims to problematize and reinvent ways of inhabiting. Readers are thus invited to an exploration of the interiority of the home and the psyche trough the theoretical tools developed by psychoanalysis, where the subject's liberation from their body, their house, and their suffering requires the creation of hospitable spaces where social bonds can develop.In DeChamplain’s novel, the emptying of the house, inherited following maternal suicide, calls for the reconstruction of a physical and psychological space for the narrator, whose tendency to avoid her own voice is overturned by the symbolizing instances embodied by the character of Chloé and by the family writings. Initially feared and despised, the house is reclaimed by the narrator who mobilizes it to redefine the mother-daughter relationship and to reintegrate her female lineage. In Dawson’s book, the relationship with the house is altered by the depressive state; through the medium of photography and the various literary genres used by the author, the prison of home serves as a starting point for the reactivation of the chain of signifiers defeated by the disease. Drawing upon a hybridity that is both formal and linguistic, the writer manages to cross the threshold of home to bring about, within his work, a collective, plural and political discourse on depression which the we/us (nous) of his communities can inhabit.Key words: House; home; shelter; inhabiting; trauma; lineage; depression; psychoanalysis; Quebec literature; contemporary literature
