Abstract
The Arctic is the geographical region located in the northernmost part of the Earth. For objective geographical and historical reasons, it consists of only five, precisely defined States - the USA, Canada, Denmark, Norway and Russia. The international legal regime of the Arctic is regulated by customary international law rules that have been created by the Arctic States. These rules are regional – they apply only to the Arctic region and only to its States. According to these rules, each Arctic State has the right to its own section of the Arctic, called a sector, which is entirely under its sovereignty. This means that the space in the sector is the State territory of the respective State, in particular - a territorial sea; there is no high sea in the waters of the Arctic.
