Abstract
Summary The Hawke Basin is a large undrilled Mesozoic Basin in offshore Labrador, situated between the Chidley and Orphan Basins. While the nearby Hopedale and Saglek basins have proven petroleum systems, including gas discoveries and one oil show, the Hawke Basin is emerging as a promising frontier for exploration. The basin’s formation resulted from rifting between Greenland and Labrador during the Early Aptian to Late Maastrician. Recent seismic and geochemical data collection has provided valuable insights, revealing the presence of numerous potential source rocks, and highlighting significant reservoir potential in the Cretaceous synrift and postrift sections. The basin features thick sediments in its southern region and localized half grabens in the north, indicating favorable conditions for hydrocarbon accumulation. Modern 2D seismic data has revealed various hydrocarbon indicators, including bright events and gas chimneys. Modeling by Beicip Franlab has shown this area to be highly prospective for both oil and gas and will be the one of the regions of focus in the Newfoundland and Labrador 2025 Call for Bids.
