Abstract

fetched live from OpenAlex

This thesis examines the role of students from Quebec and Ontario in the Student Volunteer Movement for Foreign Missions (SVM) from the formation of the organization to the eve of World War I. At this time there was excitement building among Christians for foreign mission and a belief that the whole world could be reached within a matter of years. The urgency came from several Western countries, including Canada. In order to understand how those from Quebec and Ontario were involved, this thesis examines personal accounts, records of convention attendance, talks given, and lists of those who went into foreign mission. It also analyzes the SVM convention held in Toronto in 1902 to understand how Canada interacted with larger SVM events. Lastly, the thesis studies Canadian women who were involved in the SVM.This thesis demonstrates that those from Quebec and Ontario not only were involved within the SVM but also played significant and diverse roles within it. Their contributions were helpful to the goals of the movement. The accounts of those engaged with the SVM illustrate how participants from these provinces embraced its vision and undertook a wide range of roles within the organization.

Not calibrated prevalence, not ground truth. Human validation pending. Learned from the 10,348 direct Codex labels and 10,348 direct Gemma labels. Candidate is the union of thresholded teacher heads; consensus is their intersection. These outputs are machine_predicted_unvalidated and are not human labels or direct frontier model labels.

Machine scores (provisional)

The two teacher heads of the student model, read on this work. A score orders the frame for review; it never asserts a category, and the validation status ships verbatim with every row.

Baseline scores from an immature model (maturity gate not passed, 7 training rounds). Scores rank; they never assert a category.
