The Identity of the Teacher as a Mentor of Student Teachers

Abstract
This chapter analyzes research addressing mentor identity, including studies and classifications of conceptions, roles, functions, and mentors’ responsibilities. The final aim is to provide a vision of the mentor’s professional identity from a dynamic perspective, considering identity as something in continual construction and negotiation. Manifold conceptions of the teacher mentor and how these conceptions influence identity are addressed. Mentor functions and roles are analyzed. The classifications employed in other studies are considered. How this identity can be approached from the perspective of the dialogical self is examined. Based on this review, recommendations are made on how to support and facilitate this professional identity development. The lack or inadequate preparation that classroom teachers receive to be mentors is discussed.
