Abstract
As synthetic diamonds become increasingly prominent in the jewellery market, this article honours the incremental steps taken by scientists, over a quarter of a millennium, to understand and ultimately replicate the world’s most valuable gemstone. This story begins in the early 18th Century, with Isaac Newton musing on the nature of diamond, and ends in the middle of the 20th Century as the secret of diamond synthesis is finally revealed.
