Abstract
près la première grande biographie du philosophe médiéviste Étienne Gilson (1884-1978) due au P. Laurence Shook, parue à Toronto en 1984 3 , il était important qu'une « biographie intellectuelle et politique » émane enfin d'un historien français exploitant de riches archives et correspondances multiples, particulièrement dans l'aire francophone.Il est vrai que le P. Shook avait déjà, de son côté, puisé dans un fonds de textes et de témoignages issus des longs séjours que l'historien de la philosophie médiévale avait effectués, pendant des décennies, dans le Nouveau Monde, notamment au Canada et aux États-Unis.Rappelons d'emblée son grand rayonnement dans ces deux derniers pays -parallèle à celui de son ami Jacques Maritain 4 , -ce qui le conduira à la fondation, voulue par lui dès 1929, de l'Institut d'Études Médiévales de Toronto.Mais cette première biographie en langue française s'accompagne désormais du premier tome des OEuvres complètes du philosophe, si bien que ces deux volumes se complètent et se répondent en quelque sorte, du moins pour les années 1908-1943 puisque ce tome I couvre ses années de jeunesse, puis l'entredeux-guerres et une partie de la Seconde Guerre mondiale.Sans reprendre toutes les étapes si riches et variées de sa longue vie, nous voudrions davantage mettre en valeur des écrits et des combats peu connus -
