Las alteraciones estructurales introducidas por el neoliberalismo han conducido a muchos investigadores a pensarlo más allá de su carácter de modelo económico e ideología política. Desde esa perspectiva existe un importante consenso al considerarlo ante todo como la racionalidad misma del capitalismo contemporáneo, ya que organiza la acción de los gobernantes, al mismo tiempo que propone técnicas y procedimientos destinados a guiar la conducta de los gobernados (Laval & Dardot, 2013, pág. 15). Dentro de su marco surgen reglas prácticas que otorgan a las personas, entre otras cosas, poderosas razones morales para adherir al capitalismo y respuestas concretas a la pregunta de cómo dar sentido al trabajo en las organizaciones (Boltanski & Chiapello, 2002, pág. 43).
