Abstract

This is an undergraduate textbook for a first course in ship structures. It would follow a course in mechanics of solids, which would follow a course in statics. Much of the material is similar to that found in civil engineering texts on structures, but with several key differences. As floating objects, ships are supported quite differently than buildings. Other key differences include the fundamental structural concept of a ship ( an arrangement of stiffened plating ) vs buildings (typically frameworks of beams and columns). I also explore shear flow in some depth, a crucial issue in ships. The books builds up to the idea of matrix structural analysis and gently touches on how that idea leads to the finite element method. There are many problems at the ends of chapters and many solutions provided. This is the main reason I wrote the book. I feel that most texts in ship structures are reference works rather than focused on the undergraduate.
